Summer is Here

Summer is Here

Its beginning to feel a lot like summer. The time to go camping, go to the lake, go hiking, go to the beach, go off-roading, work on the ranch, going on a road trip, or just going just to go. This is also the time where many blowouts happen due to low tread levels, bulges in tires, and/or dry rot. It can never hurt to get your tires, brakes, suspension, under hood inspected before the road trip to get you the peace of mind while traveling down the road to your favorite fishing hole.

How Tire Balancing and Mounting has Changed over the Years

Tire mounting and balancing has changed drastically over the last 10 years. Today, cars are coming with more luxurious wheels and lower profile tires verses 5, even 10 years ago where tires had some more rubber to eliminate many of the road vibrations. Today, a standard wheel balance is no longer considered a "proper wheel balance" as many times, there is still a road force vibration from the tire and even the wheel that can only be found while pressure is put to the wheel and tire such as when driving. The Hunter Road Force Balancer not only performs the standard wheel balancing, it also performs what is called Road Force Balance which applies pressure to the tire as if it were on the car and on the road and measures the stiffness between the tire and wheel. If it were out of specifications, it will then lead the certified technician to sit the tire in a particular spot with the wheel to eliminate the vibrations and then re-check. This sort of balancing is great for all the ... read more

Tire Anatomy

Tire Anatomy

Ever wonder what the numbers on the side of your tire mean? As seen on the graphic, the first letter, “P” in this case stands for passenger car tire, on some light duty trucks you will see “LT” before the number. That tells the technician that the tire has either a 6-ply cord in the tire or a 10-ply cord designed for heavy duty and can carry a certain amount of weight. The first number in the graphic shows 215 which is the width of the tire tread from shoulder to shoulder where it meets the road. The following number “60” is the “Aspect Ratio” and that percentage is taken from the tire width and how high or low the tire is made from the wheel to the tread. The next letter is in most cases “R” which means this tire is a radial tire that does not need a tube inside the tire to hold the air, you will also see “T”, “ZR” for examples showing that the tire is made for a different purpose. The num ... read more

TPMS Light

TPMS Light

Ever notice the yellow symbol with an exclamation mark in the middle pop on? What should I do? The light represents the Tire Pressure Monitoring System, or TPMS, it gauges the pressure of your tires and repeatedly sends a signal to the vehicle computer. The light and/or message will illuminate that one or more tires have lost air pressure and will need to be checked and adjusted. It is best to visit a tire service center such as Adams Tireworx which specialize in the TPMS system to check the tire pressures, adjust if necessary and inspect the tire for any possible puncture in the tire. What happens if the light stays on and the driver doesn’t have the pressures checked? The tire will wear out unevenly and will damage both the shoulder treads of the tire but also the sidewall. It is important to immediately check the tire pressures and if one is drastically lower than the rest, it is recommended to put the spare tire on if available or call for a tow truck and have the tire repa ... read more
